Your Brahmatal Trek adventure begins with a drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung, the starting point of the trek. Lohajung is a village in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, about 250 kilometers from Rishikesh. The drive takes around 10 hours.
The drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung for the Brahmatal Trek is scenic, passing through mountain roads. On a clear day, you can see the Garhwal Himalayas in the distance.
The drive is peaceful, following the River Ganga. You’ll pass three important river meeting points (confluences): Devprayag (Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Rivers), Rudraprayag (Mandakini and Alakananda Rivers), and Karanprayag (Alaknanda and Pindar River). At Devprayag, you can see the distinct colors of the two rivers merging.
Lohajung is close to the Nanda Ghunti peak. If you arrive before sunset, you might see a beautiful sunset on the peak. Local stories say the village is named after a battle (jung) Goddess Parvati fought with a demon named Lohasur.
When you reach Lohajung, you’ll check into a guesthouse. You can freshen up, watch the sunset if time allows, and take a short walk. Lohajung has a small market where you can buy any last-minute trekking supplies for your Brahmatal Trek.
Lohajung is at a high altitude, so it can be cold, especially at night. It can also be rainy or foggy depending on the time of year. Pack warm clothes. In the evening, you’ll get a briefing about the Brahmatal Trek and the plan for the next day. You’ll then have dinner and rest for the night.
Day 2 - Lohajung to Gujreni

Following water pipes will lead you to more houses and beautiful rhododendron trees. These trees are very colorful in February and March and covered in snow in winter. After trekking for a couple of hours, you’ll reach Begum, a good place to rest with great views of the Himalayan meadows. A short 10-minute walk from Begum, you’ll cross a stream. After another hour of trekking, you’ll arrive at the Gujreni stream, where your campsite will be. The campsite is in a forest with oak, maple, and rhododendron trees.
The Gujreni campsite is also good for birdwatching. You might see birds like the Himalayan woodpecker. After reaching the campsite, you can rest and have lunch. In the evening, you can take short walks to get used to the altitude and enjoy the sunset. You’ll then have dinner and rest for the next day of the Brahmatal Trek.
